Real Weddings | A Day at the Museum

Magee and Kacey were an absolute privilege to work with from the first consultation to the end of the wedding day. Their contagious excitement and giddy affection for each other fill any room they’re in, and their wedding day was equally infused with joy and with the love of all their favorite people.

The day began with the couple and wedding party getting ready at the gorgeous Junto hotel, and Ben (Storyteller Adams) photographed the getting ready process and first looks in the most amazing natural light. Flawless makeup applications by Carly Jo Makeup had all the girls looking like beautifully enhanced versions of themselves (to quote Magee after her beauty trial: “I would trust Carly with my life”), and all the details of a dream-come-true day began to fall into place. Magee slipped into her lush, elegant gown, Kacey got into his tux, and they finally got to see each other and share the special moment of their first look on the day they would become husband and wife.

Magee and Kacey’s wedding day happened to be a little rainy and slushy, so the transition from the Junto to the museum had the potential to pose some challenges, but the images of Magee & Kacey’s arrival have an amazing magazine-like quality and are actually some of my favorites from their album.

The Museum is an amazing wedding venue for many reasons, but one of my favorites is its relative lack of seasonality. While there is an outdoor ceremony option available, many couples (like Magee & Kacey) opt for an indoor ceremony in the beautiful Edwards Court. The ceiling of the court is all skylights, so the space offers the dreamy quality of natural light that you would have with an outdoor ceremony, but with no concern for the weather or need for a rain plan. The ceremony space was set up simply with black chairs with long satin bows and the Chihuly sculpture in the back of the space.

As soon as Magee and Kacey arrived at the museum, they began taking photos with some their favorite exhibits, and these images are all so good that narrowing them down to a few favorites to include on this post was truly a challenge! They also got their wedding party shots done pre-ceremony to help keep the timeline of the day smoothly flowing and to allow their closest friends to enjoy cocktail hour.

As guests arrived, they stopped by the table just outside Edwards Court to drop off their cards for the couple and pick up their wedding programs, which were printed in newspaper format (“The ‘Till Death Dispatch”). The ceremony was officiated by a very close friend of the couple, and his account of the progression of their relationship was heartwarming with just the right amount of humor. Flanked by their wedding party dressed elegantly in black tuxes and dresses, Magee and Kacey said their vows and were pronounced husband and wife.

During cocktail hour, guests enjoyed espresso martinis and margaritas (and Busch Lights - Kacey’s beer of choice) and found their seats on a handwritten guest check seating chart (the first hint of a subtle diner theme that carried through some of the reception decor).

The couple entered their reception to enthusiastic applause from their guests, and following a few sweet words from the couple and from Magee’s father Dave (who had changed into his Nikes and was ready to party), guests enjoyed a delicious dinner service catered by the Museum’s in-house caterer, Schokko Cafe. Tables were dressed simply in white linens with black napkins and black-rimmed glass chargers from Aiden & Grace, and the diner theme made an appearance again in the simple metal caddy table number/centerpieces and the black and white checkered dance floor (also from Aiden & Grace).

Magee & Kacey shared a dance with each other and then with their parents, and then DJ Axcess opened up the dance floor and the party was officially on. When guests were ready for something sweet, Buckeye Donuts came out for dessert (the newlyweds are OSU alums and met on campus, so it was only right). After dancing a few songs in her wedding gown, Magee made a change into a very cute white minidress so she was ready to dance the rest of the night away. The dance floor was packed the whole night - it is no exaggeration to say that this was one of the most energetic, active wedding dance floors I have ever gotten to witness. It follows logically that, with guests so busy dancing the night away, they worked up a second appetite - and thus the pizza appeared!

As the reception drew to a close to the tunes of Hang On, Sloopy and Carmen Ohio, the couple and their guests said their goodbyes (and took a few donuts for the road). Magee and Kacey’s day was full of their favorite things, their favorite people, and their personalities. I hope they always remember how it felt to celebrate the first night of their forever surrounded by everyone who loves them most.
